Free option: public clinics

Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.

What to expect

  • Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
  • A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
  • Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
  • Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
  • Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.

Questions about STD testing in Salt Lake City

Hours and services change. Call ahead or check the clinic's own page before you go.

Where can I get a free STD test in Salt Lake City?

UAF Legacy Health's HIV test is free, and it charges a flat fee for each chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis test. It tests on Monday and Thursday evenings, and walk-ins are welcome. At the county's Infectious Disease Clinic, testing only for HIV has no office visit fee, and the rapid HIV test is free for people at high risk while grant funds last. For other STD testing in Salt Lake City, Planned Parenthood Association of Utah uses a sliding scale and says no one will be denied services for inability to pay. It also says that since January 12, 2026, low-income Utahns who qualify can get STI testing and treatment at no or very low cost through the Title X program.

Do I need an appointment at the Salt Lake County STD clinic?

It helps. The county says its Infectious Disease Clinic takes walk-ins when possible, but an appointment shortens your wait and makes sure you're seen; call 385-468-4242. It's open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and opens at 1 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of the month. You don't need to live in Salt Lake County, and the clinic can't bill health insurance.

Can teens get tested in Salt Lake City?

Yes. The county's Infectious Disease Clinic and Odyssey House's Martindale Clinic both see people 14 and older. Planned Parenthood Association of Utah says teens are always welcome and that its STI services are confidential, so parents don't have to know about the visit. For all other services, it requires a parent's consent.

How long do STD test results take in Salt Lake City?

The county's Infectious Disease Clinic says results generally take 7 to 10 days, and its rapid HIV test gives a result the same day. UAF Legacy Health says its results come back in 3 to 5 business days. If you order a lab test online instead, the price table on this page shows each provider's stated results time.

Can I order an STD test online in Salt Lake City?

Yes. The price table on this page shows the providers that sell in Utah, each price with the date we checked it. You order and pay online, then give a sample at a lab near you, or use a home kit. Some providers let you order and give a sample the same day.
