Quest Diagnostics: prices and how it works

Lab testing service

Quest sells Quest Diagnostics lab tests directly to consumers on questhealth.com. You buy an STD test or panel online, then give a blood, urine or self-collected vaginal swab sample at a Quest patient service center. An independent physician group orders the tests and reviews the results, and each order carries a physician service fee (listed with each price).

Best for: People who want a standard lab STD test at a nearby Quest center without a doctor visit, paying cash or with HSA/FSA.

Every current price

Every test and panel Quest Diagnostics sells that we track, grouped by how you give your sample.

How it works

  1. Buy a test or panel on questhealth.com; no doctor visit is needed.
  2. Book a visit at a Quest patient service center, or pay extra for in-home collection where available.
  3. Give your sample at the visit: blood, urine, or a vaginal swab you collect yourself.
  4. Get an email with a secure link when all results are ready, typically 1–3 business days after the sample.

Results, privacy and payment

Results
Quest emails a secure link once all results in the order are ready, typically 1–2 business days after the sample (2–3 business days for the Expanded panel, herpes and HPV tests). Some states, including California and Pennsylvania, may hold results a few extra days under state rules. The physician group calls you if a result needs prompt attention or an STD or HIV result is positive.
Privacy
Tests are not billed to insurance, so no insurance statement is created. Quest says only you, Quest and the ordering physician group can see your results, and they are not shared with your own doctor unless you share them. Positive results for reportable infections are reported to public health as required by law, even when the test is ordered online.
Insurance and payment
Cash pay only; Quest says these tests are for people who pay directly and do not want reimbursement from insurance or government programs. HSA/FSA cards that work as credit or debit cards are accepted, and Klarna and Affirm are offered.
Physician consultation
An independent physician group orders every test and reviews results, paid for by a physician service fee per order. Discussing your results with a provider is included at no extra cost. After a positive result the provider may prescribe treatment for chlamydia, gonorrhea or trichomoniasis in some states, but cannot treat HIV, syphilis or hepatitis. Medication cost is not stated.

Pros

  • Quest says it has 2,000+ locations, and same-day appointments are often available.
  • Single tests, 4- and 7-infection panels, and a Mycoplasma genitalium test.
  • Most results in 1–2 business days; the Expanded panel, herpes and HPV tests take 2–3.
  • A results discussion with an independent provider is included at no extra cost.

Cons

  • Not available in Arizona, Hawaii or Puerto Rico.
  • A physician service fee is added to each order (listed with each price).
  • No at-home STD kit; you visit a center (or pay extra for in-home collection).
  • The included provider cannot treat HIV, syphilis or hepatitis, and insurance is not accepted.
