About this test

Mycoplasma genitalium, often shortened to M. gen, is a bacterium. CDC says it causes urethritis in men, with or without symptoms, and has been linked to cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease in women.

CDC doesn't recommend testing people without symptoms. It recommends a test for men whose urethritis keeps coming back and for women with recurring cervicitis, and says to consider it for pelvic inflammatory disease. Throat and rectal testing for M. gen is not recommended.

The test is a NAAT. CDC says it is FDA-cleared for urine and for urethral, penile, cervical and vaginal swabs. CDC also says resistance testing should be done when available, because the result guides which antibiotic will work.

If symptoms continue after treatment for urethritis or cervicitis, ask a clinician whether this test makes sense for you. Results can take longer than standard STD tests. M. gen isn't on CDC's national list of notifiable conditions.

When to test

CDC doesn't publish a window period for M. genitalium, and it doesn't recommend testing people without symptoms. Testing is for symptoms that persist or come back after treatment, so the timing follows your symptoms and your clinician's advice, not a date after exposure.

Retesting

CDC says a test of cure is not recommended for people without symptoms who received a recommended treatment. If symptoms continue after treatment, see a clinician.

Common questions

Should I test for Mycoplasma genitalium without symptoms?

No. CDC says screening people without symptoms is not recommended. The test is meant for urethritis or cervicitis that keeps coming back after treatment.

Why isn't M. gen in standard STD panels?

Because CDC recommends against screening for it. It's a test for specific symptoms, usually ordered after other infections have been ruled out or treated.

How long do M. gen results take?

Often longer than standard tests. STDcheck, for example, says Mycoplasma genitalium tests may need an additional week to process.

What sample is used for an M. gen test?

Urine or a genital swab. CDC says the NAAT is FDA-cleared for urine and for urethral, penile, cervical and vaginal swabs.
