About this test
Hepatitis C is a virus that infects the liver. CDC recommends that every adult 18 and older get tested at least once, and that pregnant people test during each pregnancy. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for adults aged 18 to 79.
Testing starts with an antibody blood test. A positive antibody test means you have had hepatitis C at some point. CDC says it should be followed by an RNA test, a nucleic acid test that shows whether the virus is still there. Check whether a panel includes the RNA follow-up, or plan to get it from a clinician if the antibody test is positive.
Hepatitis C can be cured. CDC says an 8 to 12 week course of pills cures more than 95% of people with hepatitis C.
Hepatitis C is nationally notifiable, so a positive result is reported to public health, which keeps it confidential.
When to test
CDC's STI treatment guidelines say the average time from exposure to a positive antibody test is 4 to 10 weeks, and CDC's testing guidance says it usually takes 8 to 11 weeks before antibodies can be detected. CDC says about 97% of people test positive by 6 months. An RNA test can detect the virus 1 to 3 weeks after exposure. An antibody test 11 weeks or more after an exposure covers both CDC timelines, and one at 6 months is the most reliable. Ask a clinician about an RNA test if you need an answer sooner.
Retesting
One test is enough for most adults. Ask a clinician about repeat tests if you have an ongoing risk. After a positive antibody test, the RNA test shows whether you need treatment, and a clinician checks after treatment that the virus is gone.
Reported to public health
Positive results for this infection are reported to the state or local health department, which keeps them confidential. That includes tests you order online. What that means for your privacy
Common questions
Do I need a hepatitis C test?
CDC recommends that every adult get tested at least once, even without symptoms or known risk. Pregnant people should test during each pregnancy.
What does a positive hepatitis C antibody test mean?
It means you have had hepatitis C at some point. It doesn't show whether the virus is still there. CDC says the next step is an RNA test, which shows a current infection.
Is hepatitis C curable?
Yes. CDC says an 8 to 12 week course of oral medicine cures more than 95% of people with hepatitis C.
How soon after exposure can I test for hepatitis C?
CDC gives two timelines for antibodies: 4 to 10 weeks on average (STI treatment guidelines) and usually 8 to 11 weeks (testing guidance). A test from 11 weeks covers both, and CDC says about 97% of people test positive by 6 months. An RNA test can detect the virus 1 to 3 weeks after exposure.
