Same-day STD testing: walk-in labs, rapid tests and results
Medical review pendingWritten by the STD Test Prices editorial team using CDC sources
You can get tested for STDs today: order a test online and walk into a lab, go to an urgent care center, or take a self-test. Getting the result today is a separate question. Only rapid tests give results in minutes, and they exist for HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis. Most STD tests go to a lab, and those results take one to a few business days.
Key points
- Testing today and getting results today are different things. Several online providers let you order and give a sample at a lab the same day, with results 1 to 3 days after the visit.
- Rapid tests give a result in about 15 to 30 minutes. Some urgent care centers and clinics run them for HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea or trichomoniasis.
- Self-tests show a result at home in minutes for HIV and syphilis, and for women, chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis. Bought online, they ship to you first.
- No rapid test we found covers a full panel.
- A test taken too soon after an exposure can miss an infection.
- Testing is confidential, not anonymous.
Can you get STD test results the same day?
Yes, with a rapid test, but only for some infections. Everything else goes to a lab and takes at least a business day.
HIV. CDC says rapid tests on a finger stick or oral fluid give results in 30 minutes or less, and that includes self-tests. A lab test may take several days. A positive antibody test, which includes most rapid tests, needs a follow-up test to confirm it.
Syphilis. The First To Know self-test, authorized by the FDA in 2024, gives a result at home in about 15 minutes. A positive result needs lab testing to confirm it. In clinics, two FDA-cleared rapid tests can find syphilis during the visit, while lab-based syphilis testing might take 3 to 5 days, according to CDC's 2024 testing guidance.
Chlamydia and gonorrhea. In 2021 the FDA allowed a chlamydia and gonorrhea test to be used in doctors' offices, urgent care and other clinics. It runs while you wait and gives a result in about 30 minutes. For women, the Visby home test checks for chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis, with a result in about 30 minutes.
Everything else. Every herpes, hepatitis and full panel test we track goes to a lab.
How to get tested today
Order online and walk into a lab
You pay online or by phone, get a lab order by email or text, and walk into a Quest or Labcorp patient service center. Staff draw blood, and you give a urine sample or, for some tests, a swab. STDcheck and Rapid STD Testing say the visit takes about 5 minutes.
These providers say you can order and give your sample on the same day:
- STDcheck. No appointment. Once you have your order form, go during the lab's business hours.
- Priority STD Testing. Walk in the day you order, no appointment needed.
- Rapid STD Testing. It says the order reaches the lab within 2 to 3 minutes, "so you can still test today."
- Everlywell's in-person panels. Book or walk in at a Quest location once the order is approved. Everlywell says that typically takes up to 2 hours between 8 AM and 8 PM local time, and that same-day collection depends on the location's hours.
- Quest. Its product pages say same-day appointments are often available.
Labcorp OnDemand doesn't advertise same-day testing. It says you can visit a Labcorp location once you get the email with your requisition number, and that you don't need an appointment, although booking may shorten the wait.
Despite its name, Rapid STD Testing is also a lab service. Most of its results take 1 to 2 business days, and it says it doesn't claim same-day results "because real lab results don't work that way."
Urgent care and clinics with rapid tests
An urgent care center can see you today, and some run rapid tests. CityMD offers walk-in STD testing at its New York locations, including a rapid HIV test with results in 15 minutes. AFC Urgent Care New Garden in Greensboro, North Carolina, lists rapid tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and HIV and syphilis, with results within 30 minutes.
Other tests usually go to a lab, so call ahead and ask which tests the center runs on site. You also pay for the visit. Our urgent care guide covers prices. CDC's GetTested site lists fast, free or low-cost testing near you.
Self-tests read at home
CDC says an HIV self-test gives results within 20 minutes and that you can buy one at a pharmacy or online. Self-tests for syphilis and, for women, chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis also give results in minutes. Ordered online, a self-test ships to you first. In our tables, "Same day" for a self-test counts from when you take it. Our at-home tests guide compares kits and store prices.
Fastest options we track
For four common choices, these are the offers with the fastest stated results on each route. Lab rows also show whether the provider says you can give your sample the day you order.
For each test, the offer with the fastest stated results on each route among the providers we track. Lab results count from when the lab has your sample, and a self-test's from when you take it. "Same-day sample" means you can order and give your sample the same day, not that results come that day. When results times tie, a same-day sample comes first, then the lower price.

What "results in 1 to 2 days" means
A results time starts when the lab has your sample, not when you order, and it usually counts business days. What the providers say:
- STDcheck: most results within 1 to 2 business days after the sample is collected. HIV RNA, trichomoniasis and Mycoplasma genitalium tests may take an extra week.
- Priority STD Testing: typically 24 to 72 hours after the lab visit.
- Rapid STD Testing: most results in 1 to 2 business days after the lab visit.
- Quest: its expanded STD panel typically takes 2 to 3 business days after you give your sample.
- Labcorp OnDemand: 1 to 4 days from when the sample arrives at its lab.
A sample given on a Friday afternoon may not have results until the next week. Our results timing guide explains where the time goes.
Walk-in tips
- Order first. Rapid STD Testing explains that the lab can only take a sample against a doctor's order, which is created when you buy the test, and that you pay nothing at the lab.
- Bring what your provider asks for. Labcorp OnDemand asks for your requisition number and a photo ID. Quest asks people who bought through its site for a government-issued photo ID. STDcheck and Rapid STD Testing say you don't need ID at the lab.
- Check the hours. Rapid STD Testing says many labs are open Saturday mornings and very few on Sundays.
- Expect a wait without an appointment. Quest says scheduled appointments get priority and walk-ins wait for the next opening.
- Fasting isn't needed for STD tests unless your provider says so. Priority and Rapid STD Testing say their STD tests need no fasting, and STDcheck asks for it only for its wellness panel. Still read the preparation notes. If you take biotin, Labcorp OnDemand's STI test asks you to wait at least 72 hours after your last dose.
- Hold your urine. STDcheck, Priority and Quest ask you not to urinate for an hour before a urine test.
Testing too early
A fast result only helps if the test can detect the infection yet. CDC says a lab antigen/antibody test on blood from a vein can usually detect HIV 18 to 45 days after exposure. Antibody tests, which include most rapid tests and self-tests, take 23 to 90 days. If you test negative before the window period ends, test again after it.
If you may have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours, ask a doctor, an emergency room or an urgent care provider about PEP today. CDC says PEP must start within 72 hours.
Our window periods guide covers each infection, and the when-to-test calculator gives dates for your exposure.
Privacy: confidential, not anonymous
Rapid STD Testing and Quest's own site say they don't bill insurance. Testing isn't anonymous, though. CDC says chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV are reportable in every state, so the lab or clinic reports positive results to public health, and those reports are kept confidential. Our privacy guide explains what ends up in your records.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I get STD test results the same day?
- For some infections, yes. Some urgent care centers and clinics run rapid tests for HIV, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea with results in about 15 to 30 minutes. Self-tests give results at home in minutes for HIV, syphilis and, for women, chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis. Lab tests, including every full panel we track, take one or more business days after you give the sample.
- Where can I get same-day STD testing near me?
- Order a test online from a provider that offers same-day lab visits, such as STDcheck, Priority STD Testing or Rapid STD Testing, then walk into the Quest or Labcorp location you picked. You can also walk into an urgent care center, or use CDC's GetTested site to find clinics near you. The results come later unless the clinic runs a rapid test.
- Do I need an appointment for walk-in STD testing?
- Usually not. STDcheck, Priority STD Testing and Rapid STD Testing say you don't need an appointment once you've ordered, and Labcorp OnDemand says the same. Quest says scheduled appointments get priority and walk-ins wait for the next opening, so booking can save time.
- Does Rapid STD Testing give same-day results?
- No. Rapid STD Testing is an online provider that sends you to a lab. It says most results are ready in 1 to 2 business days after the lab visit and that it doesn't claim same-day results. A rapid test is a different thing: a test that gives a result in minutes, at a clinic or at home.
- Are rapid STD tests accurate?
- They can take longer to turn positive after an exposure. CDC says most rapid HIV tests are antibody tests, which can usually detect HIV 23 to 90 days after exposure, compared with 18 to 45 days for a lab test on blood from a vein. A positive rapid HIV or syphilis result needs a lab test to confirm it.
- What is the fastest way to get STD test results?
- For HIV, syphilis, chlamydia or gonorrhea, a rapid test at a clinic or a self-test gives a result in minutes. For a full panel, the fastest route we track is an online order with a same-day lab visit. The fastest lab offers in the table on this page state results in 1 to 2 days from the lab visit.
