Texas rules and programs
Checked Nov 1, 2026
Free and low-cost public testing
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) says free and low-cost HIV and STD testing is available in many places across Texas, and lists testing sites by city. Its Test for Texas program mails free at-home tests for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia to anyone in Texas 13 or older, with no insurance needed.

Expedited partner therapy
CDC lists expedited partner therapy as permissible in Texas since June 24, 2009, under the state's rules for physicians and advanced practice nurses (22 Tex. Admin. Code §190.8 and §222.4). A clinician who treats you for an STD can prescribe medicine for your partners without examining them.
Medicaid at Planned Parenthood
Texas is one of seven states that bar Planned Parenthood from Medicaid, KFF reported in June 2026, and one of two whose exclusion federal courts upheld years before the Supreme Court's Medina ruling. Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas says Texans who rely on Medicaid are currently blocked from using it at its health centers.

Free option: public clinics
Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.
What to expect
- Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
- A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
- Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
- Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
- Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.
Questions about STD testing in Dallas
Hours and services change. Call ahead or check the clinic's own page before you go.
Where can I get a free STD test in Dallas?
Abounding Prosperity's FAQ says all its services are free, including STI testing and treatment; its testing page says many services cost little or nothing depending on eligibility. Resource Center's HIV and syphilis tests are free, and its gonorrhea and chlamydia tests are free with an office visit fee. Prism Health North Texas uses a sliding fee scale and says it doesn't deny care based on ability to pay. Dallas County's Charity Care Program can lower or cover STI costs for eligible uninsured Texas residents.
Do I need an appointment at the Dallas County STD clinic?
Yes. Dallas County Health and Human Services asks you to call (214) 819-1819 before you come; it offers same-day or next-day appointments, and the line opens at 7:45 a.m. To walk in instead, Kind Clinic's Oak Lawn site takes walk-ins for testing on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and Resource Center takes walk-ins when its schedule allows.
Can teens get tested without a parent in Dallas?
Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, which runs the North Dallas Shelburne health center, says it can test and treat a minor for certain STDs without parental consent at any of its health centers.
Can I use Medicaid at Planned Parenthood in Dallas?
Not right now. Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, which runs the Dallas health center, says Texans who rely on Medicaid are currently blocked from using it at Planned Parenthood, and KFF lists Texas among seven states that bar Planned Parenthood from Medicaid. The affiliate says uninsured patients may qualify for low- or no-cost services based on income.
Can I order an STD test online in Dallas?
Yes. The price table on this page shows the providers that sell in Texas, each price with the date we checked it. You order and pay online, then give a sample at a lab near you, or use a home kit. Some providers let you order and give a sample the same day.
