Tennessee rules and programs

Checked Nov 1, 2026

  • Testing for minors

Tennessee law (Tenn. Code Ann. §68-10-104) lets state and local health officers, physicians, and nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives and physician assistants who work with a supervising physician examine, diagnose and treat a minor infected with an STD without the parents' knowledge or consent.

Sources: Tennessee Code (free public access) (opens in a new tab)

  • Expedited partner therapy

CDC lists expedited partner therapy as permissible in Tennessee since August 16, 2006, for chlamydia only, under medical board rules (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0880-2-.14(9)). A physician who treats you for chlamydia can give you unnamed prescriptions, or the antibiotic itself, for your partners.

  • Medicaid at Planned Parenthood

Tennessee is not among the seven states that KFF listed in June 2026 as barring Planned Parenthood from Medicaid. Planned Parenthood says the federal provision that blocked its Medicaid payments expired on July 4, 2026, and asks Medicaid patients to check with their health center. Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi's Nashville Health Center lists three TennCare plans among the insurance it accepts: Bluecare, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of TN and Wellpoint.

Free option: public clinics

Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.

What to expect

  • Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
  • A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
  • Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
  • Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
  • Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.

Questions about STD testing in Nashville

Hours and services change. Call ahead or check the clinic's own page before you go.

Where can I get a free STD test in Nashville?

Nashville CARES says testing at its CARES 360 clinic on Thompson Lane is free for all clients, and its TestSticks & Chill program sends free HIV self-test kits by mail or local delivery, or you can pick one up. Metro Public Health's Sexual Health Center charges one low fee for an STD exam, and its East and Woodbine public health centers use a sliding fee scale for Davidson County residents. Neighborhood Health and Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center offer income-based discounts.

Do I need an appointment at Metro Public Health's STD clinic?

Yes. Metro Public Health asks everyone to call 615-340-5647 to schedule STD and HIV testing. Walk-ins may be seen depending on staffing and demand, and must sign in by 2:30 p.m. The Sexual Health Center is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Planned Parenthood's Nashville center takes walk-ins from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2 p.m., and MinuteClinic takes walk-ins too.

Can teens get tested without a parent in Nashville?

For STD care, yes. Tennessee law (Tenn. Code Ann. §68-10-104) lets health officers and licensed physicians, nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives and physician assistants examine, diagnose and treat a minor infected with an STD without the parents' knowledge or consent. Clinics may tell you otherwise: Nashville CARES's pages say people under 18 need a parent's or guardian's permission for an HIV test and for STI testing and treatment. Call the clinic first and ask what it requires.

Can I use TennCare at Planned Parenthood in Nashville?

Yes. Planned Parenthood's Nashville Health Center lists three TennCare plans among the insurance it accepts: Bluecare, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of TN and Wellpoint. If you're uninsured, Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi says it offers deep discounts with no proof of income required. Tennessee is not among the seven states that KFF listed in June 2026 as barring Planned Parenthood from Medicaid.

Can I order an STD test online in Nashville?

Yes. The price table on this page shows the providers that sell in Tennessee, each price with the date we checked it. You order and pay online, then give a sample at a lab near you, or use a home kit. Some providers let you order and give a sample the same day.
