Tennessee rules and programs

Checked Nov 1, 2026

  • Testing for minors

Tennessee law (Tenn. Code Ann. §68-10-104) lets state and local health officers, physicians, and nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives and physician assistants who work with a supervising physician examine, diagnose and treat a minor infected with an STD without the parents' knowledge or consent.

Sources: Tennessee Code (free public access) (opens in a new tab)

  • Expedited partner therapy

CDC lists expedited partner therapy as permissible in Tennessee since August 16, 2006, for chlamydia only, under medical board rules (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0880-2-.14(9)). A physician who treats you for chlamydia can give you unnamed prescriptions, or the antibiotic itself, for your partners.

Sources: CDC (opens in a new tab), CDC (opens in a new tab)

  • Medicaid at Planned Parenthood

Tennessee is not among the seven states that KFF listed in June 2026 as barring Planned Parenthood from Medicaid. Planned Parenthood says the federal provision that blocked its Medicaid payments expired on July 4, 2026, and asks Medicaid patients to check with their health center. Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi's Nashville Health Center lists three TennCare plans among the insurance it accepts: Bluecare, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of TN and Wellpoint.

Free option: public clinics

Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.

What to expect

  • Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
  • A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
  • Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
  • Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
  • Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.

Questions about STD testing in Memphis

Hours and services change. Call ahead or check the clinic's own page before you go.

Where can I get a free STD test in Memphis?

AHF says testing at its Wellness Center on Elvis Presley Boulevard is completely free, regardless of insurance status; it's open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. OUTMemphis offers free HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis testing at its Community Center on South Cooper Street, and at its Youth Empowerment Center for ages 18 to 24. Friends For All on Poplar Avenue says HIV and hepatitis C testing are always free, and you can add a full STI panel for a fee listed on its page. The Shelby County Health Department says HIV testing is always free. Its Sexual Health Clinic charges one fee for the visit, STI testing and treatment if you don't have TennCare or certain other insurance, and Christ Community Health Services offers a sliding fee discount.

Do I need an appointment at the Shelby County Health Department's Sexual Health Clinic?

For STI testing, plan on one. The health department asks you to call 901-222-9385 to schedule, and the clinic's page says appointments are available one day in advance; the phone lines are open Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Its pages list different clinic hours: the Sexual Health Program page lists 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. on weekdays, and the clinic's page lists 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., so ask when you call. For testing without an appointment, Friends For All takes walk-ins for STI testing on weekdays, CHOICES has walk-in times every weekday morning and afternoon, and Planned Parenthood's two Memphis centers take walk-ins in the morning and early afternoon.

Can teens get tested without a parent in Memphis?

For STD care, yes. Tennessee law (Tenn. Code Ann. §68-10-104) lets health officers and licensed physicians, nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives and physician assistants examine, diagnose and treat a minor infected with an STD without the parents' knowledge or consent. The Shelby County Health Department's Sexual Health Program sees people ages 13 and up, and CHOICES says that in Tennessee, minors ages 13 to 17 can get STI testing without a parent's permission. HIV testing can be different: Nashville CARES says Tennessee law requires you to be 18 to get an HIV test from a clinic, physician or lab without a parent's or legal guardian's consent, so call the clinic first.

How does the Shelby County Health Department charge for STD testing?

If you don't have TennCare, BlueCross, Wellpoint or UnitedHealthcare commercial insurance, the Sexual Health Clinic charges one fee that covers the office visit, testing and treatment; the amount is listed on its Sexual Health Program page. It takes cash, debit and credit cards, but not American Express. HIV testing is always free. The health department says results typically take up to five working days.

Can I order an STD test online in Memphis?

Yes. The price table on this page shows the providers that sell in Tennessee, each price with the date we checked it. You order and pay online, then give a sample at a lab near you, or use a home kit. Some providers let you order and give a sample the same day.
