Georgia rules and programs
Checked Nov 1, 2026
Public testing
The Georgia Department of Public Health says you can get STD screening and treatment through your county health department or your own doctor, and its service locator lists free or reduced-cost STD services. Its HIV program also takes requests for HIV self-tests you can use at home.
Sources: Georgia Department of Public Health (opens in a new tab), Georgia Department of Public Health (opens in a new tab)
Testing for minors
Georgia law (O.C.G.A. §31-17-7) says that when a minor who has, or says they have, a sexually transmitted disease, or who is at risk for HIV, consents to care from a hospital, public clinic or licensed physician, that consent is as valid as an adult's. The physician may tell a parent or guardian about the treatment but doesn't have to.
Sources: Georgia General Assembly (Official Code of Georgia, public access) (opens in a new tab)
Expedited partner therapy
CDC lists expedited partner therapy as permissible in Georgia since September 21, 2022, under Georgia Code §31-17-7.1 and Department of Public Health rules. A clinician who diagnoses you with chlamydia or gonorrhea can prescribe antibiotics for your partners without examining them.
Medicaid at Planned Parenthood
Georgia is not among the seven states that KFF listed in June 2026 as barring Planned Parenthood from Medicaid. Planned Parenthood says the federal provision that blocked its Medicaid payments expired on July 4, 2026, and asks Medicaid patients to check with their health center. Planned Parenthood Southeast's payment page doesn't mention Medicaid, and its health centers' insurance lists differ: the Cobb center lists Georgia Medicaid, and the East Atlanta center's list doesn't include Medicaid.

Free option: public clinics
Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.
What to expect
- Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
- A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
- Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
- Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
- Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.
Questions about STD testing in Atlanta
Hours and services change. Call ahead or check the clinic's own page before you go.
Where can I get a free STD test in Atlanta?
AID Atlanta, in partnership with AHF Wellness, offers free HIV and STI testing, including chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis, at 1438 W Peachtree St NW, and free treatment when appropriate. AHF's Ansley Wellness Center on Piedmont Avenue says its testing is free too. Positive Impact Health Centers in Decatur offers free HIV testing and sliding-scale STI testing. Fulton County Board of Health and DeKalb Public Health charge on a sliding scale; DeKalb's family planning services, which include STI testing, are free for people 19 and under, and it hands out free HIV self-test kits at its health centers.
Do Fulton County and DeKalb clinics take walk-ins?
Yes, but both prefer appointments. Fulton County Board of Health says its sexual health clinics may see walk-ins but recommends an appointment; at 10 Park Place the last walk-in is taken at 3 p.m. Fulton's clinics serve Fulton County residents 14 and older. DeKalb Public Health says appointments are preferred and walk-ins are welcome; call (404) 294-3700.
Can teens get tested without a parent in Atlanta?
Yes. Georgia law (O.C.G.A. §31-17-7) says that when a minor who has, or says they have, a sexually transmitted disease consents to care from a hospital, public clinic or physician, that consent is as valid as an adult's. The physician may tell a parent, but doesn't have to. Fulton County's sexual health clinics see people 14 and older, and its Teen Health Clinic in Adamsville serves ages 12 to 21.
Can I use Medicaid for STD testing in Atlanta?
Fulton County Board of Health and DeKalb Public Health both accept Medicaid. At Planned Parenthood Southeast it depends on the health center: its payment page doesn't mention Medicaid, and the East Atlanta center's insurance list doesn't include it, so call 404-688-9300 before you go. Georgia is not among the seven states that KFF listed in June 2026 as barring Planned Parenthood from Medicaid.
Can I order an STD test online in Atlanta?
Yes. The price table on this page shows the providers that sell in Georgia, each price with the date we checked it. You order and pay online, then give a sample at a lab near you, or use a home kit. Some providers let you order and give a sample the same day.
