Colorado rules and programs

Checked Nov 1, 2026

  • Free and low-cost public testing

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) says many clinics offer confidential, free or low-cost STI testing, and you can order a free at-home STI and HIV test through its website. Its locator lists testing and treatment sites across the state.

Sources: Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (opens in a new tab)

  • Testing for minors

Under Colorado law (C.R.S. 25-4-409), a minor doesn't need a parent's or guardian's consent for a consultation, exam, preventive care or treatment for sexually transmitted infections, and that care is confidential, apart from required child-abuse reporting. If the minor is 13 or younger, the provider may involve a parent or guardian.

Sources: Colorado General Assembly (opens in a new tab)

  • Expedited partner therapy

CDC lists expedited partner therapy as permissible in Colorado since July 19, 2007, based on Colorado Medical Board Policy 40-10. CDC says the board expressly supports EPT and that a prescription doesn't require examining each patient first.

  • Medicaid at Planned Parenthood

Colorado is not among the seven states that KFF listed in June 2026 as barring Planned Parenthood from Medicaid, and KFF names Colorado among the states that used state-only funds to keep Planned Parenthood and other affected providers running. Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains lists Colorado Medicaid among the plans it accepts.

Free option: public clinics

Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.

What to expect

  • Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
  • A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
  • Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
  • Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
  • Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.

Questions about STD testing in Denver

Hours and services change. Call ahead or check the clinic's own page before you go.

Where can I get a free STD test in Denver?

Denver Health's community team offers free testing for HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea and hepatitis C at 750 East 9th Avenue and The Center on Colfax, by appointment, with no insurance needed. HeyDenver, The Empowerment Program and Servicios de La Raza also say their testing is free. The Denver Sexual Health Clinic uses a sliding fee scale and says no one is denied care based on ability to pay. Colorado's health department also offers free at-home STI and HIV tests.

Do I need an appointment at the Denver Sexual Health Clinic?

Yes. Denver Health says appointments are required for all visits: call 303-602-3540. If you have no symptoms, you can book a testing-only visit for gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, HIV and hepatitis C. For walk-in testing, The Empowerment Program takes walk-ins on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and Servicios de La Raza on Wednesday afternoons.

Can teens get tested without a parent in Denver?

Yes. The Denver Sexual Health Clinic sees people 14 and older and says those 14 to 17 can get confidential care without parental consent. Colorado law (C.R.S. 25-4-409) says a minor doesn't need a parent's or guardian's consent for an STI exam, preventive care or treatment.

How long do STD test results take in Denver?

At Denver Health's community testing sites, preliminary rapid HIV, syphilis and hepatitis C results come by the end of the visit, and chlamydia and gonorrhea results in 24 to 72 hours. The Denver Sexual Health Clinic posts results to MyChart and calls you if one is positive. Planned Parenthood's Denver centers say rapid HIV results take 10 to 40 minutes and are given in person.

Can I order an STD test online in Denver?

Yes. The price table on this page shows the providers that sell in Colorado, each price with the date we checked it. You order and pay online, then give a sample at a lab near you, or use a home kit. Some providers let you order and give a sample the same day.
