About this test
Trichomoniasis, or trich, is an infection caused by a parasite. CDC calls it the most common curable STI, and says about 70% of people with it have no symptoms.
The test is a NAAT on urine or a vaginal swab. CDC says NAATs are highly sensitive and detect more trich infections than older microscope tests. Some panels include trich and some don't, so check the What's included column. STDcheck notes that trich tests may need up to an extra week to process.
In 2025 the FDA authorized a home test for women that checks for trich along with chlamydia and gonorrhea and gives results in about 30 minutes.
Trich is treated with pills taken by mouth, which CDC says are safe in pregnancy. It isn't on CDC's national list of notifiable conditions, and CDC's guidelines describe it as not reportable. Women should retest after treatment.
When to test
CDC doesn't publish a test window for trichomoniasis. It says symptoms, when they happen, can start 5 to 28 days after infection, or much later. CDC's guidance after a sexual assault repeats STI tests 1 to 2 weeks after exposure if the first test was negative. Testing 2 weeks or more after sex matches that timing.
Retesting
CDC recommends that women retest about 3 months after treatment, whether or not they think their partners were treated. CDC says there isn't enough evidence to recommend retesting men.
Common questions
Can I test for trich at home?
Yes. Some home collection kits include trich on urine or a vaginal swab. For women, the FDA authorized a home test in 2025 that gives results for trich, chlamydia and gonorrhea in about 30 minutes.
How soon after sex can I test for trich?
Two weeks after sex matches CDC's timing for repeat STI tests. CDC says symptoms, if they appear, can start 5 to 28 days after infection.
Why do trich results take longer?
Some labs run trich separately. STDcheck, for example, says trich tests may need an additional week to process. Check each provider's stated turnaround.
Is trich reported to the health department?
No. Trichomoniasis isn't on CDC's list of nationally notifiable conditions, and CDC's guidelines describe it as not a reportable disease.
