About this test
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that may cause no symptoms. When symptoms do appear, CDC says they may take several weeks to show. CDC recommends a chlamydia test every year for sexually active women under 25, and for women 25 and older at increased risk, such as those with a new partner or more than one partner. Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men should test at least once a year at every site used for sex.
The test is a nucleic acid amplification test, or NAAT, which detects the bacteria's genetic material. CDC calls it the most sensitive test for chlamydia. It runs on first-catch urine for men and on a vaginal swab for women, which CDC says you can collect yourself with the same accuracy as a clinician. A urine test doesn't check the rectum, so a rectal swab is needed if you had receptive anal sex.
Chlamydia is treated with antibiotics. It is reportable in every state, so a positive result is reported to the health department, which keeps it confidential.
When to test
CDC doesn't publish an exact window period for chlamydia. Its guidance after a sexual assault is to repeat STI tests 1 to 2 weeks after exposure if the first test was negative, because an infection may not be detectable at first. Testing 2 weeks or more after sex matches that timing. A test sooner can still find an older infection. If you have symptoms, see a clinician now instead of waiting.
Retesting
CDC recommends a new chlamydia test about 3 months after treatment, whether or not you think your partners were treated. Don't retest sooner than 4 weeks after finishing treatment, because CDC says a NAAT can pick up leftover dead bacteria and give a false positive. During pregnancy, CDC recommends a test of cure about 4 weeks after treatment.
Reported to public health
Positive results for this infection are reported to the state or local health department, which keeps them confidential. That includes tests you order online. What that means for your privacy
Common questions
Can I test for chlamydia at home?
Yes. Home kits collect urine or a vaginal swab and mail it to a lab for the same kind of NAAT used at a clinic. CDC says self-collected vaginal swabs are as accurate as clinician-collected ones. In 2025 the FDA also authorized a home test for women that checks for chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis and gives results in about 30 minutes.
How soon after sex can I test for chlamydia?
Two weeks after sex matches CDC's timing. CDC's guidance after a sexual assault repeats STI tests 1 to 2 weeks later when the first test is negative, because a very new infection can be missed. If you have symptoms, see a clinician now.
Do I need to stop urinating before a urine test?
Quest and STDcheck both ask you not to urinate for at least an hour before you give a urine sample, so the sample is large enough. Follow the instructions that come with your order.
Will a chlamydia test show up on my insurance?
Only if it's billed to your plan. If you pay a testing provider directly and no claim is filed, your insurer receives nothing and sends no explanation of benefits. A positive result is still reported to the health department, confidentially.
Does a urine test check for chlamydia in the rectum?
No. A urine test checks the urethra. CDC recommends a rectal chlamydia test for men who had receptive anal sex in the past year. Choose a provider that offers swabs for the sites you used.
