Texas rules and programs
Checked Nov 1, 2026
Free and low-cost public testing
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) says free and low-cost HIV and STD testing is available in many places across Texas, and lists testing sites by city. Its Test for Texas program mails free at-home tests for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia to anyone in Texas 13 or older, with no insurance needed.

Expedited partner therapy
CDC lists expedited partner therapy as permissible in Texas since June 24, 2009, under the state's rules for physicians and advanced practice nurses (22 Tex. Admin. Code §190.8 and §222.4). A clinician who treats you for an STD can prescribe medicine for your partners without examining them.
Medicaid at Planned Parenthood
Texas is one of seven states that bar Planned Parenthood from Medicaid, KFF reported in June 2026, and one of two whose exclusion federal courts upheld years before the Supreme Court's Medina ruling. Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas says Texans who rely on Medicaid are currently blocked from using it at its health centers.

Free option: public clinics
Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.
What to expect
- Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
- A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
- Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
- Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
- Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.
Questions about STD testing in Austin
Hours and services change. Call ahead or check the clinic's own page before you go.
Where can I get a free STD test in Austin?
ASHwell says its STI testing and treatment are always free, though medication may cost something; it works by appointment. Vivent Health says HIV testing is free at all its locations, and the Center for Health Empowerment covers STD screening and treatment at no out-of-pocket cost for people in its Wellness Center program. Austin Public Health charges one flat fee for testing and treatment, and CommUnityCare health centers use a sliding fee scale.
Can I walk in for an STD test in Austin?
Yes. Kind Clinic on Koenig Lane takes walk-ins for gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, HIV and hepatitis C testing Monday to Friday, and it may close early when it fills up. Planned Parenthood's Austin health centers take walk-ins as the schedule allows, and so does MinuteClinic. Austin Public Health's clinic works by appointment: book online or call 512-972-5430.
Can teens get tested without a parent in Austin?
Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas says it can test and treat a minor for certain STDs without parental consent at any of its health centers. CommUnityCare lists diagnosis and treatment of reportable infections, such as STIs, among the services a minor can consent to in Texas.
Can I use Medicaid at Planned Parenthood in Austin?
Not right now. Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, which runs the Austin health centers, says Texans who rely on Medicaid are currently blocked from using it at Planned Parenthood, and KFF lists Texas among seven states that bar Planned Parenthood from Medicaid. The affiliate says uninsured patients may qualify for low- or no-cost services based on income.
Can I order an STD test online in Austin?
Yes. The price table on this page shows the providers that sell in Texas, each price with the date we checked it. You order and pay online, then give a sample at a lab near you, or use a home kit. Some providers let you order and give a sample the same day.
