Free option: public clinics

Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.

What to expect

  • Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
  • A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
  • Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
  • Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
  • Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.

Questions about STD testing in Kansas City

Hours and services change. Call ahead or check the clinic's own page before you go.

Where can I get a free STD test in Kansas City?

The Kansas City, Missouri Health Department's Sexual Health Clinic at 2400 Troost Ave. charges no fees for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV testing, treatment is free if you need it, and there is no residency requirement. KC CARE Health Center offers HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis tests to everyone at no cost and with no appointment at 3515 Broadway, and Vivent Health says HIV testing is free at its center on East 50th Terrace. KC CARE's prevention program also sends free at-home test kits for HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis to people in Jackson, Clay, Platte, Cass and six other nearby Missouri counties; it says supply is limited. KC CARE, Swope Health and Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center use sliding fees and say they serve patients regardless of ability to pay.

Do I need an appointment at the Kansas City Health Department's Sexual Health Clinic?

No, but an appointment saves your spot: call (816) 513-6379, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Walk-ins are accepted during clinic hours, Monday to Friday, 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m., but the Health Department says to come before 10:30 a.m. because slots fill up quickly. It closes at 1 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month. KC CARE's free HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis testing at 3515 Broadway needs no appointment, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Vivent Health takes walk-ins for testing during its prevention hours.

Can teens get tested without a parent in Kansas City?

Yes. Missouri law (RSMo §431.061) lets any minor consent on their own to care for venereal disease, the law's term for STDs. Under §431.062, parents don't have to pay unless they agree to, and the physician may tell a parent but doesn't have to. The Kansas City, Missouri Health Department says anyone 14 or older can use its Sexual Health Clinic without parental permission. Planned Parenthood Great Plains says what patients discuss with its staff and all medical records are confidential, regardless of age. MinuteClinic's STI testing is for patients 18 and older only.

Can I use Medicaid (MO HealthNet) for STD testing in Kansas City?

Yes, at many sites, but not at Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood Great Plains says that since August 28, 2024, care at Planned Parenthood health centers in Missouri isn't covered by Medicaid (its general payment page still lists Missouri Medicaid plans). It says STI testing and treatment can qualify for financial assistance through the Title X program, and its Patty Brous center offers an income-based sliding fee if you're uninsured. Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center accepts MO HealthNet and MO HealthNet managed care plans, and KC CARE Health Center accepts Medicaid. The Health Department's Sexual Health Clinic charges no fees for testing.

Can I order an STD test online in Kansas City?

Yes. The price table on this page shows the providers that sell in Missouri, each price with the date we checked it. You order and pay online, then give a sample at a lab near you, or use a home kit. Some providers let you order and give a sample the same day.
