Free and low-cost public testing
The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) says its parish health units serve people who are uninsured or underinsured and that no one is ever turned away for an inability to pay. LDH says state funding helps pay for STD testing and treatment at parish health units. Its Louisiana Health Hub, run by LDH's STI/HIV/Hepatitis Program, says free, fast testing for HIV, hepatitis and other STIs is available and links to a statewide list of testing agencies and to CDC's testing site finder.

Testing for minors
Louisiana law (La. R.S. 40:1121.8) lets a minor (in Louisiana, a person under 18) who has, or believes they have, a venereal disease, the law's term for a sexually transmitted disease, consent on their own to care from a hospital, a public clinic or a licensed physician. The consent of a parent, guardian or spouse is not needed. The physician may tell a parent, guardian or spouse about the treatment, even over the minor's objection, but doesn't have to.
Sources: Louisiana State Legislature (opens in a new tab), Louisiana State Legislature (opens in a new tab)
Expedited partner therapy
CDC lists expedited partner therapy as permissible in Louisiana since June 25, 2008, under La. Rev. Stat. §40:1121.6, which CDC says expressly authorizes it for chlamydia and gonorrhea. A physician or advanced practice registered nurse who diagnoses you can prescribe or give antibiotics for your sexual partners without examining them. A state rule CDC cites also covers physician assistants, says you get a written document to give your partner, and lets any licensed pharmacist in Louisiana fill the prescription.
Medicaid at Planned Parenthood
Louisiana is not among the seven states that KFF listed in June 2026 as barring Planned Parenthood from Medicaid; KFF counts it among the states whose exclusions courts blocked before the Supreme Court's Medina ruling and says Louisiana had no Planned Parenthood clinic as of May 2026. Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast says September 30, 2025 was its last day of operations in Louisiana. Planned Parenthood now lists a New Orleans Health Center on South Claiborne Avenue, run by Planned Parenthood Great Plains. That center's page lists Aetna and Provider Care as the insurance it accepts and doesn't list Medicaid, and Planned Parenthood Great Plains' payment page names Medicaid plans only in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma, so ask the center whether it can take Louisiana Medicaid. Planned Parenthood says the federal provision that blocked its Medicaid payments expired on July 4, 2026, and asks Medicaid patients to check with their health center.

Free option: public clinics
Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.
What to expect
- Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
- A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
- Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
- Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
- Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.

Do I need an appointment at the health department's STD clinic for New Orleans?
The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) says its Orleans Parish health unit, the Delgado Personal Health Clinic at 1676 Gravier Street, is temporarily closed, and asks people to go to its Metairie or Marrero health units for STI testing and treatment. Metairie is at 111 N. Causeway Blvd. (504-838-5100) and Marrero at 1855 Ames Blvd. ((504) 349-8802); both clinics are open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. LDH's pages don't say whether you need an appointment, so call first. In the city, Brotherhood, Incorporated takes walk-ins Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the LSU-CrescentCare Sexual Health Center at 2515 Canal Street accepts walk-ins Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Can teens get tested without a parent in New Orleans?
For STD care, yes. Louisiana law (La. R.S. 40:1121.8) says a minor who has, or believes they have, a venereal disease, the law's term for an STD, can consent on their own to care from a hospital, a public clinic or a licensed physician, and a parent's or guardian's consent is not needed. The law lets the physician tell a parent or guardian about the treatment, even if the minor objects, but doesn't require it. The New Orleans Health Department says people 13 and older can get STI testing at some locations without a parent or guardian present, so ask the clinic when you call.
Can I get STD testing in Spanish in New Orleans?
Some clinics say so. St. Thomas Community Health Center's appointment form lets you ask for a Spanish-speaking provider and care team, and its website has a Spanish version. NOELA Community Health Center in New Orleans East offers primary care in English, Spanish and Vietnamese and lists STI and HIV testing under its women's health (OB/GYN) services. CrescentCare's STI testing page gives its walk-in testing times in Spanish too, and Access Health Louisiana says many of its physicians and staff are bilingual. Ask for an interpreter when you call if you need one.
