Free option: public clinics

Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.

What to expect

  • Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
  • A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
  • Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
  • Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
  • Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.

Questions about STD testing in Louisville

Hours and services change. Call ahead or check the clinic's own page before you go.

Where can I get a free STD test in Louisville?

Volunteers of America Mid-States says its HIV testing is free and confidential at its office at 2820 W. Broadway, Suite 600; its page lists HIV testing only. The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness says many tests at the testing sites it lists are free. Its Specialty Clinic, 914 E. Broadway, calls its services low cost, bills your insurance and lists on its page the most you'll be charged if insurance doesn't cover the visit. The department's Harm Reduction Outreach Services, a service for people who use drugs, offers free HIV and hepatitis screening at 400 E. Gray St. Family Health Centers and Park DuValle Community Health Centers offer sliding fee discounts based on income and household size, and Park DuValle says no one will be denied services due to inability to pay.

Do I need an appointment at the Louisville Metro Specialty Clinic?

Not for testing. The Specialty Clinic says walk-in testing is available Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with no appointment needed. Exams and treatment, if you need them, are by appointment, and the clinic says next-day appointments are usually available. For questions, call 502-574-6699. Family Health Centers' immediate care also takes walk-ins at East Broadway, Portland and Iroquois, and Volunteers of America says appointments for its HIV testing are preferred but not required.

Can teens get tested without a parent in Louisville?

For STD care, yes. Kentucky law (KRS 214.185) lets a physician, with a minor's consent, examine the minor for venereal disease, the law's term for a sexually transmitted disease, and advise, prescribe for and treat the minor without the consent of, or notice to, a parent or guardian. The physician may tell a parent or guardian about treatment when, in the physician's judgment, that would benefit the minor's health. Parents aren't financially responsible for this care unless it is essential to preserve the minor's health. In Kentucky, adulthood begins at 18 (KRS 2.015). Family Health Centers' Portland immediate care sees children 12 and older as well as adults, while its East Broadway immediate care sees adults only. Norton Prompt Care lists its STI screening and rapid HIV testing for ages 18 and older.

Can I use Medicaid for STD testing in Louisville?

Yes, at many sites. Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawaiʻi, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky says it accepts Medicaid in Kentucky, and its Louisville Health Center lists Medicaid among the insurance it takes. Family Health Centers accepts all forms of Kentucky Medicaid. Norton Prompt Care lists Kentucky Medicaid and several Kentucky Medicaid plans. The Louisville Metro Specialty Clinic says most insurance is accepted and bills your insurance. Planned Parenthood says the federal provision that blocked its Medicaid payments expired on July 4, 2026, and asks Medicaid patients to check with their health center.

Can I order an STD test online in Louisville?

Yes. The price table on this page shows the providers that sell in Kentucky, each price with the date we checked it. You order and pay online, then give a sample at a lab near you, or use a home kit. Some providers let you order and give a sample the same day.
