  • Free public HIV testing

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) says HIV testing is available in many places across Illinois and is free. It includes education and risk reduction counseling. The IDPH HIV/STD Hotline (1-800-243-2437) can tell you where to get tested, and the department's STD page links to CDC's testing site finder.

  • Testing for minors 12 and older

Illinois law (410 ILCS 210/4) lets a minor 12 years of age or older who may have come into contact with a sexually transmitted disease consent to their own prevention, diagnosis and treatment. A parent's or guardian's consent is not needed. Under Section 5 of the same law, the clinician may tell a parent about the treatment, but does not have to.

  • Expedited partner therapy

CDC lists expedited partner therapy as permissible in Illinois since January 1, 2022, under 410 Ill. Comp. Stat. 325/6. A clinician who diagnoses you with chlamydia, gonorrhea or trichomoniasis can give you antibiotics for your partners without examining them.

  • Medicaid at Planned Parenthood

Illinois is not among the seven states that KFF listed in June 2026 as barring Planned Parenthood from Medicaid. KFF names Illinois among the states that used state-only funds to keep Planned Parenthood and other affected providers running. Planned Parenthood says the federal provision that blocked its Medicaid payments expired on July 4, 2026. Planned Parenthood of Illinois lists Medicaid and Medicaid managed care among the insurance it accepts.

Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.

What to expect

  • Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
  • A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
  • Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
  • Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
  • Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.

Questions about STD testing in Chicago

Hours and services change. Call ahead or check the clinic's own page before you go.

Where can I get a free STD test in Chicago?

For free or low-cost STD testing in Chicago, start with the Chicago Department of Public Health's STI clinics, which serve patients regardless of ability to pay or insurance. Vivent Health (TPAN) on North Broadway says its HIV testing is free; it also tests for syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia and hepatitis C. Cook County Health says it won't deny services to anyone based on ability to pay, but it bills all patients, so apply for its financial assistance if you're uninsured. Howard Brown Health, ACCESS, Erie Family Health and Planned Parenthood of Illinois offer sliding fee scales based on income.

Do I need an appointment at a city STD clinic in Chicago?

Usually. The Chicago Department of Public Health asks you to call its clinics for an appointment and says limited walk-ins are available. Bring a photo ID. You can be tested without one, but you need it to get results that aren't ready the same day. For walk-in testing, Howard Brown Health's sexual health clinics see patients first come, first served, ACCESS Grand Boulevard offers walk-in STI testing on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Cook County Health's CORE Center runs a walk-in STI screening clinic.

Can teens get tested confidentially in Chicago?

Erie Family Health's Teen Center at 2418 W. Division Street offers confidential STI and HIV testing, and you don't have to be an Erie patient. Erie says that if you have insurance, it can make sure your insurer doesn't notify a parent or guardian, and that it has resources to help pay for testing if you can't. Call 312.666.3494 or use its online teen chat for ages 12 to 24.

Can I use Medicaid at Planned Parenthood in Chicago?

Yes. Each Chicago health center's page lists Medicaid among the plans it accepts, and Planned Parenthood of Illinois says it continues to care for Medicaid recipients. Without insurance, it offers a sliding scale fee based on income. Its Loop, Near North, Austin and Rogers Park health centers say they will never turn you away if you can't pay.

Can I order an STD test online in Chicago?

Yes. The price table on this page shows the providers that sell in Illinois, each price with the date we checked it. You order and pay online, then give a sample at a lab near you, or use a home kit. Some providers let you order and give a sample the same day.
