Free option: public clinics

Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.

What to expect

  • Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
  • A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
  • Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
  • Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
  • Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.

Questions about STD testing in Tampa

Hours and services change. Call ahead or check the clinic's own page before you go.

Where can I get a free STD test in Tampa?

AHF says STD and HIV testing are always free at its Wellness Center on North Habana Avenue, with or without insurance. Metro Healthy Communities, formerly Metro Inclusive Health, says HIV and hepatitis C testing are always free at its Seminole Heights and Fletcher Avenue centers, and that most insurance, including Medicaid, covers its STI testing at no cost to you. The health department's STD clinic uses a sliding fee scale and says it serves everyone in need regardless of ability to pay.

Do I need an appointment at the Hillsborough County health department STD clinic?

No. The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County runs its STD clinic at the University Area Health Center, 13601 N. 22nd Street, first come, first served, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Take a ticket from the kiosk when you arrive; waits average 1 to 2 hours. Bring a photo ID, proof of income and your insurance card if you have one.

Can teens get tested without a parent in Tampa?

Yes. Florida law (§384.30) lets clinics, doctors and nurses examine and treat a minor for a sexually transmissible disease without a parent's consent, and the visit stays confidential, including no bill sent to a parent. Planned Parenthood of Florida, which runs the Tampa health centers, says minors can consent to confidential care without parental notification, and it offers discounted STD testing to teens 13 to 18. Suncoast Community Health Centers says its family planning care is open to minors.

How long do STD test results take in Tampa?

Metro Healthy Communities says rapid STI testing at Seminole Heights gives results in as little as 90 minutes, and its traditional STI tests take 3 to 5 days. MinuteClinic says chlamydia and gonorrhea results are often ready in 1 to 2 days, and HIV and syphilis can take longer. If you order a lab test online instead, the price table on this page shows each provider's stated results time.

Can I order an STD test online in Tampa?

Yes. The price table on this page shows the providers that sell in Florida, each price with the date we checked it. You order and pay online, then give a sample at a lab near you, or use a home kit. Some providers let you order and give a sample the same day.
