  • Low-cost public testing

The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) lists STI testing clinics county by county, with their hours and fees. Many charge on a sliding fee scale. For the Pima County clinics in Tucson, the list says fees are based on income and household size and no one is turned away for inability to pay. For Maricopa County, it points to the county's community testing events for free and low-cost testing. ADHS also lists county health departments and community organizations that offer HIV testing, and says you can order an HIV home test kit by mail through HIVAZ.

  • Testing for people under 18

Arizona law (A.R.S. §44-132.01) lets a minor (in Arizona, a person under 18) who may have contracted a venereal disease, the law's term for a sexually transmitted disease, consent on their own to hospital or medical care to diagnose or treat it. A parent's or legal guardian's consent is not needed.

  • Expedited partner therapy

CDC lists expedited partner therapy as permissible in Arizona since July 6, 2013. CDC bases this on Arizona's law for physicians (Ariz. Rev. Stat. §32-1401) and a Board of Nursing rule for nurse practitioners (Ariz. Admin. Code R4-19-511), which allow prescribing antimicrobials for a person exposed to a patient the clinician has diagnosed with a communicable disease, without examining that person first. A clinician who diagnoses you with an STD can prescribe medicine for your partners without examining them.

  • Medicaid at Planned Parenthood

Arizona is not among the seven states that KFF listed in June 2026 as barring Planned Parenthood from Medicaid. KFF lists Arizona among at least seven other states that enacted exclusions that courts blocked before the Supreme Court's Medina ruling. Planned Parenthood says the federal provision that blocked its Medicaid payments expired on July 4, 2026, and asks Medicaid patients to check with their health center. Planned Parenthood Arizona's list of the insurance plans it accepts doesn't include AHCCCS, Arizona's Medicaid program, and it asks patients to call 855-207-7526 to check their coverage.

Free option: public clinics

Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.

What to expect

  • Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
  • A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
  • Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
  • Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
  • Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.

Questions about STD testing in Tucson

Hours and services change. Call ahead or check the clinic's own page before you go.

Where can I get a free STD test in Tucson?

The Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF) says clinical services at its SAAF Health Clinic, including HIV, STI and hepatitis C testing, are provided at no cost; its rapid HIV test gives results in about 20 minutes. COPE Community Services' Insiders Program offers free HIV testing for adults over 18. El Rio Health's teen and young adult clinics offer free STI testing and treatment for ages 14 to 24 at its Congress, El Pueblo and Stone health centers. Pima County Health Department's clinics charge on a sliding fee scale based on income and say nobody will be turned away for inability to pay.

Do I need an appointment at the Pima County Health Department clinics?

No. The county says clients are seen on a walk-in basis as capacity allows, and wait times vary. HIV and STI testing is offered on weekdays at the Theresa Lee Public Health Center (1493 W. Commerce Court) and the Northwest Clinic (1010 W. Miracle Mile), and on Mondays and Tuesdays at the East Clinic (6920 E. Broadway Blvd.). All county clinics close from noon to 1 p.m. daily and on the first Thursday of the month.

Can teens get tested without a parent in Tucson?

Yes. Arizona law (A.R.S. §44-132.01) lets a minor who may have a sexually transmitted disease consent to medical care to diagnose or treat it, and a parent's or guardian's consent is not needed. Pima County Health Department says minors do not need parental consent at its clinics, and its Project C.O.N.T.A.C.T. offers walk-in STD testing and treatment to eligible teens at little or no cost; call 520-940-0165. El Rio Health's teen and young adult clinics say parent permission isn't needed for most services for ages 14 to 24.

Can I use AHCCCS for STD testing in Tucson?

At some sites. MHC Healthcare, which runs the Ina Health Center in northwest Tucson, accepts AHCCCS plans and offers STI screening and treatment through its women's health services. Planned Parenthood Arizona's list of accepted plans doesn't include AHCCCS, so call 855-207-7526 to check before you go; its Tucson center says insurance isn't required and grant funding is available to those who qualify. Without coverage, Pima County's clinics and El Rio Health offer sliding fee scales based on income.

Can I order an STD test online in Tucson?

Yes. The price table on this page shows the providers that sell in Arizona, each price with the date we checked it. You order and pay online, then give a sample at a lab near you, or use a home kit. Some providers let you order and give a sample the same day.
