Wisp: prices and how it works

Telehealth

Wisp is a telehealth company that sells at-home STI test kits you collect yourself and mail to an accredited lab. Kits range from single-infection tests to a 9-Panel kit, and many include a telehealth consult if you test positive. Wisp does not take insurance but accepts HSA and FSA cards.

Best for: People who want a self-pay home kit with a telehealth consult and a pharmacy prescription for common treatable STIs.

How it works

  1. Order a kit online; no provider visit or insurance is needed.
  2. Collect your sample at home (urine, swab, finger-prick blood or oral swab, depending on the kit).
  3. Mail it to the lab with the prepaid label.
  4. See results in your Wisp account 3–5 business days after the lab receives the sample.
  5. If you test positive for an infection Wisp treats, a provider can send a prescription to your pharmacy.

Results, privacy and payment

Results
Results are posted to your Wisp account 3–5 business days after the lab receives your sample. The oral HIV self-test in the 7- and 9-Panel kits is read at home in about 20 minutes.
Privacy
Wisp says kits ship discreetly and results appear in your Wisp account. Wisp states that it reports positive chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and confirmed HIV results to your state or county health department. Positive results for reportable infections are reported to public health as required by law, even when the test is ordered online.
Insurance and payment
Self-pay only; Wisp does not accept insurance for tests, consults or prescriptions. HSA and FSA cards are accepted at checkout, and Wisp says the receipt has what you need for reimbursement. You can use insurance at the pharmacy for medication.
Physician consultation
No provider visit is needed to order. The 3-Panel, 3-Site, 5-, 7- and 9-Panel, Mycoplasma genitalium and herpes swab kits include a telehealth consult; the HIV, syphilis and HPV kits include care-team messaging only. Wisp can prescribe for chlamydia, gonorrhea (not throat), trichomoniasis, Mycoplasma genitalium and herpes; medication is paid separately at the pharmacy.

Pros

  • Prices are listed up front on each kit's page.
  • Free shipping both ways; Wisp says its test kits are available in all 50 states.
  • Many kits include a telehealth consult and a prescription for chlamydia, gonorrhea or trichomoniasis if positive.
  • Sells less common tests, such as Mycoplasma genitalium, a 3-site chlamydia and gonorrhea kit and a herpes sore swab.

Cons

  • Does not accept insurance for tests or consults.
  • Medication costs extra at the pharmacy.
  • HIV in the 7- and 9-Panel kits is an oral rapid antibody self-test; a positive result needs confirmation, which Wisp does not provide.
  • Wisp does not treat syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B or C, HPV, or gonorrhea in the throat.
