Planned Parenthood STD testing cost and when it's free

Medical review pendingWritten by the STD Test Prices editorial team using CDC sources

Planned Parenthood health centers test for STDs, but there's no national price. Its affiliates are separate nonprofits that publish their own prices, and what you pay depends on the tests, your income and your insurance.

Key points

  • Planned Parenthood health centers test for and treat STDs, and offer HIV testing.
  • Testing can be free or low cost with insurance, Medicaid, a sliding scale or Title X, depending on the health center.
  • Without those, you pay the affiliate's self-pay price. Published prices differ a lot between affiliates.
  • A rapid HIV test can give a result during the visit. Lab results take a few days, sometimes weeks.
  • Testing is confidential but not anonymous.

Does Planned Parenthood do STD testing?

Yes. Planned Parenthood health centers offer STD testing and treatment, and HIV testing is part of their services.

Planned Parenthood lists chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, trichomoniasis, hepatitis B, HPV and genital warts.

A nurse or doctor asks about symptoms and the kind of sex you've had, then helps you choose tests. Planned Parenthood says testing may mean a urine sample, a blood test, a swab or an exam, and that it usually isn't part of a regular checkup, so ask for it. If you've had oral or anal sex, CDC suggests asking about throat and rectal testing.

How much is STD testing at Planned Parenthood?

STD testing at Planned Parenthood can be free, or it can cost the affiliate's full self-pay price, depending on the health center, the tests you need, your income and your insurance.

Planned Parenthood says the price also depends on the funding a health center gets and on state and local programs. Here is what Planned Parenthood and some of its affiliates publish:

Most affiliates give a range, and a low end of zero is for people who qualify for a sliding scale or a public program. Some prices cover the visit and the tests together. Others, like Planned Parenthood of Florida's, charge for the visit and add a fee for each test.

Ask for the total before the visit. Uninsured and self-pay patients can request a written Good Faith Estimate, as Planned Parenthood South Atlantic notes.

Is STD testing free at Planned Parenthood?

It can be. Planned Parenthood says STD testing can be free or low cost, depending on your income, your insurance and the programs your health center takes part in.

Health insurance. Planned Parenthood says most plans must cover testing for certain STDs, such as HIV, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea, as preventive care. That often means no copay, though some plans charge part of the cost.

Medicaid. Where a health center can bill Medicaid, testing can cost nothing. Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest, for example, lists STI testing at no cost with Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program. Whether you can use Medicaid at Planned Parenthood depends on your state. Planned Parenthood says a federal provision blocking Medicaid payments to its health centers expired on July 4, 2026, and asks Medicaid patients to check with their health center. KFF reported in June 2026 that seven states bar Planned Parenthood from their Medicaid programs: Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas.

Sliding scale. Some health centers work out the price "depending on how much money you have," as Planned Parenthood puts it. The Ann Arbor health center's visit fee, for example, starts at zero on its income-based scale.

Title X. KFF counted 247 Planned Parenthood health centers in 29 states, about half of them, in the federal Title X family planning program in 2026. HHS says Title X services are provided regardless of ability to pay. Under federal rules, people with incomes at or below the federal poverty guidelines pay nothing, and those with somewhat higher incomes pay on a sliding scale. HHS's Title X clinic locator (opens in a new tab) lists participating clinics.

State programs. In California, Family PACT may cover STI testing at no cost if you can't afford care or need to keep it confidential from others on your health insurance, according to Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest.

How much is STD testing at Planned Parenthood without insurance?

Without insurance, you pay the affiliate's self-pay price, like those in the table above, unless you qualify for a sliding scale or a program.

You can still get tested. Planned Parenthood says health center staff work within your budget and may help you sign up for a plan or program that pays for care. What affiliates say about paying yourself:

  • The Ann Arbor health center asks for payment on the day of the visit, and Planned Parenthood of Florida's prices are for paying the same day.
  • Some affiliates offer payment plans. Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Oregon can split a bill over up to 12 months.

A health center may also refer you to a health department or community clinic with free or low-cost testing, Planned Parenthood says.

How long do Planned Parenthood STD test results take?

Some results come during the visit, but lab results usually take a few days, and Planned Parenthood says some take a few weeks.

Planned Parenthood says many clinics can do a rapid HIV test with a result in about 20 minutes. The Ann Arbor health center gives 10 to 40 minutes. The Baltimore City health center tests for HIV with a blood draw and says results take 2 days. CDC says rapid HIV tests take 30 minutes or less and a lab test may take several days.

If you don't hear back, Planned Parenthood says to call for your results.

Testing too soon after an exposure can miss an infection. Our window periods guide explains when each test can detect one.

Planned Parenthood, online test or free clinic?

Planned Parenthood can cost the least when insurance, Medicaid, a sliding scale or Title X pays most of the bill. It also suits you if you have symptoms, because a clinician can examine you and treat an infection the test finds.

If you'd pay the full self-pay price and have no symptoms, compare it with ordering online. Online services post one price per test, with no visit fee. These are the lowest current prices we track for the same tests, by route:

The lowest current price on each route among the providers we track. Results times are what each provider states.

CDC says many clinics offer confidential, free or low-cost testing, and its GetTested locator finds them by ZIP code.

Free option: public clinics

Free and low-cost testing is available at health department clinics and Title X family planning clinics. CDC's GetTested site finds confidential, free or low-cost testing near you by ZIP code.

What to expect

  • Clinics usually test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, and often hepatitis B and C, following CDC screening advice for your age, anatomy and the kind of sex you have.
  • A clinician can examine you, swab sores and often treat you in the same visit.
  • Some tests sold in private panels are usually not offered without symptoms, such as herpes blood tests and HPV tests for men, because CDC doesn't recommend them as screening tests.
  • Hours can be limited, and you may wait for an appointment or a walk-in slot.
  • Free testing usually isn't anonymous either (some publicly funded sites offer anonymous HIV testing). Positive results for reportable infections are reported to the health department, confidentially.

Our free testing guide and route comparison go into more detail. To compare prices for each test, see how much an STD test costs.

How to book and what to ask

Book online through Planned Parenthood's health center finder or call 1-800-230-PLAN. In some areas Planned Parenthood offers STD testing by telehealth, such as the Pacific Southwest affiliate's screen with a kit you mail back. Some centers test by appointment only, as the Baltimore City health center notes, so check before you walk in.

Questions worth asking when you book:

  • Which tests will I get, and do I need throat or rectal swabs?
  • What will the visit and each test cost me?
  • Do you take my insurance or Medicaid? Do you have a sliding scale or Title X funding?
  • How and when will I get my results?

Bring a photo ID and your insurance card if you have them. Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest says neither is required to be seen.

Privacy and what shows on your record

STD testing at Planned Parenthood is confidential, but it isn't anonymous. Health center pages describe STD and HIV testing as confidential. Positive results for reportable infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV are reported to the health department, and CDC says those reports are confidential.

If you use insurance, your plan receives a claim. Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest notes that a parent's or spouse's plan may tell them where you got care and which tests you had. In California you can send the plan a Confidential Communications Request, which it must accept for sensitive services such as STD testing. Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Oregon says Oregon law lets you have that information sent directly to you.

Our guides on privacy and medical records and paying cash or using insurance cover the details.

Frequently asked questions

Does Planned Parenthood test for HIV?
Yes. HIV testing is part of Planned Parenthood's HIV services, along with PEP after a possible exposure and PrEP for ongoing prevention. Planned Parenthood says many of its clinics can do a rapid HIV test with a result in about 20 minutes. Some health centers draw blood and send it to a lab instead, which takes longer.
Do I need an appointment for STD testing at Planned Parenthood?
Plan on booking one. You can book online through Planned Parenthood's health center finder or call 1-800-230-PLAN. Walk-in rules vary by health center, and some, like the Baltimore City health center, test by appointment only. In some areas you can also get STD testing through a telehealth visit.
Can I use Medicaid at Planned Parenthood for STD testing?
It depends on your state. Planned Parenthood says a federal provision that blocked Medicaid payments to its health centers expired on July 4, 2026, and asks Medicaid patients to contact their health center to check. KFF reported in June 2026 that seven states bar Planned Parenthood from their Medicaid programs. Planned Parenthood says people with Medicaid can still come in and can call to talk about costs.
Is STD testing at Planned Parenthood confidential?
Yes. Planned Parenthood health center pages describe STD and HIV testing as confidential. It isn't anonymous, though. Positive results for reportable infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV are reported to the health department, and CDC says those reports are confidential. If you use insurance, your plan also receives a claim.
Is Planned Parenthood cheaper than an online STD test?
It depends on how you pay. With insurance, Medicaid, a sliding scale or Title X, Planned Parenthood can cost little or nothing. At full self-pay prices, most of the affiliate prices we found are for a visit with testing and run higher than the lowest online prices we track for a similar panel. Both tables on this page show the date each price was checked.
